IN THE CROWN

BAZOOKA! returns to The Crown more firmly grounded in the seminal music formations of the 1970s, when jazz, rock and Latin currents merged into what became known as fusion.

Legendary musicians – Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana, to name just a few – contributed to this emerging genre, which peaked with the appearance of an historic ensemble, Weather Report.

At that moment, jazz was also creating new arteries consistent with the times. Rock became the basis for the earthy sounds of Oregon, as the weightier influence of gospel in the Black Church set the foundation for what became known as funk or soul. Among its greats were the likes of Les McCann and Eddie Harris.

Still more of the fusing came from the Latin quarter, notably in the romantic and enduring compositions and performances of Gato Barbieri.

This is the foundation for the interpretive and new music of BAZOOKA! that will come to you on Sunday evening, August 6, at The Crown.

The band has grown to eight in number: Michael Joseph Roberto (percussion), Pete Delos (guitar), Diana Tuffin (vocals), “Butch” Stewart (keyboards), Byron Lattimore (drums), Marcelo Falconi (bass), Neill Clegg (saxophone), and Sandy Blocker (percussion).
